You follow the procedure for replacing an old or outdated cartridge. If
neither of the ink out lights are solid or flashing, then hold down the
load/eject Button for three seconds. The print heads will have moved
slightly to the left and the power light will be flashing at this point.
Change the cartridge and then Press the load/eject Button. The
printer will now begin charging the ink delivery system. When the
printer is done charging, the Power light will stop flashing.

Here is the link for the animation for those who need it.

I don't know the exact procedure on this model offhand, but if no one
else comes through, go to Epson's website (www.epson.com) and find the
US site (or your country site) and click on the link. Go to support and
find the 440 manual as a pdf file, and download.

There will be a section called something like "How do I replace an
expired or old cartridge", and it will indicate which front button
presses to press to actuate the function to move the head to the change
position.

You hold down the button that has the ink droplets on it for 3 seconds or
until you hear it start to move. If you just tap the button you will get a
cleaning cycle.

It is on page 108 of the Epson owners manual for the 440 on the Epson web
site. Look on the left hand side for drivers and support. Then go to
inkjet printers, then the 440.
