Epson Stylus C86

I have had to do a major re-install after my system got trashed. Now when I
print the ink monitor does not come up. To make matters worse, the low ink
button is flashing but I don't know which cartridge is low or out. Can
anyone help me or point me in the right direction?

Check which driver the printer is using, if it is signed by Micro$ then
you are using a default driver, and this is probably why the ink monitor
doesn't come up. Default drivers don't have the bells and whistles.
Depending on your setup and o/s, if you are using a default driver then
you need to remove it and install the Epson driver, either from the
CD that came with the printer, or which you can download from
Epsons website, try clicking on Support, on any of the Epson's
websites. Then through the various products until you find your
printer listed.

I have installed from the downloaded file, the maintenance tab comes up
and I can click on 'monitor'. The program then goes into a searching mode
then finishes by telling me it can't find the printer. This all happened
after printing a colour photo.

Have you tried reinstalling the printer again?
After you do and you go to the Printers and Faxes you should see two
printers for the Epson C86. Right click on the new one and click on
Properties. Check to see in Printing Preferences if you can now see the ink
monitor. If this is now working for you then you can delete the first icon
of the C86 printer. The second listing of the C86 will become the default
printer.

Did another re-install, the install program could not find the printer
but XP did and installed. Now the printer works, Nozzle check works,
cleaning works, print head alignment works but the status monitor does
not. Still trying to find the ink monitor program on the Epson site.

Looking at the Epson download page for the C86 only reveals one file
per OS, so I'm in the bleief that the ink status monitor is included
in the entire file. This site is for U.S. based printers. Is the file
you installed the same size and date as the one Epson is promoting?

Latest part to the Saga: my C86 prints b/w, colour photos etc. etc. I can
run every utility *except* the ink monitor. Comes back with a "are the
cables connected, turned on: etc. When I last re-installed, the install
program could not find the printer either. But XP did find the 'new
hardware' and installed the drivers, so at least I can print. So now when
the red ink light comes on, I have to replace all cartridges just to be
safe? Like that is going to happen. Time for a new printer I think.

In the case of the C86, the ink status monitor is incorporated into the
driver program, which is a bit unusual.

Here is what Epson's website says about it:

What drivers did XP install? If they were the inbox versions, it may
have a limited instruction set, which may mean the ink monitor is missing.

It seems you may need to try to install the proper Epson drivers, using
the instructions Epson provided with the printer. Epson usually warns
against allowing XP to install it's driver set, and canceling the "new
hardware found" and instead installing the Epson drivers from the
provided did, or from newer downloaded driver installation files.

Epson may need to provide you with some help with a list of all files
needed to remove to start with a clean install.

Don't know which drivers XP installed - but it works. Epson so far has
given me standard replies. I have downloaded the latest file from their
site. Terribly frustrating and will probably lead to a new printer.

The question is not "academic," the drivers supplied with Windows XP are
semi-crippled. Uninstall the driver supplied by the Windows XP
installation, and install the driver from Epson's web site.

You can probably blame Micro$crew for that ... not Epson. You don't need to
get a new printer to fix a problem with bad printer driver software.

To uninstall, I need the list of files from Epson. When I use Add/Remove
I get a "cannot load library module" error.

As you wish, but may not solve anything. You probably have a bunch of
"stuff" in the registry that have to be purged to clean up the mess.
I've had old driver remnants cause problems with new printers I've
installed, until I removed the "stuff".

I would ask Epson for a list of all the files their software installs
for that printer, and remove them completely and then try a reinstall.
But your approach might work too ;-)

In fairness, this may have nothing directly to do with Microsoft,
although why the original corruption occurred is up in the air right now.

Epson can actually use some less than orthodox methods of driver
installation, and some of their drivers aren't properly registered for
XP to avoid XP from trying to install it's in box drivers.

Also, even with the XP drivers installed, usually you can install Epson
drivers and make them the default drivers without conflicts.

However, you'll notice that Eposn has a set procedure for driver
installation to try to get around XP's attempts to install its drivers,
which, if followed, usually work fine.

My experience has been that you remove stuff from the WINDOWS folder
and it promptly gets put back again, even deleteing under DOS doesn't
work, files get restored when you boot agin.
 
You can usually just ignore the XP drivers which get installed, and set
the printer to the correct default drivers from the manufacturer once
they are installed.

Turn off 'System Restore' before you "remove stuff."

Anything you delete from c:\windows\system32 will get restored from
c:\windows\system32\dllcache, a hidden folder. If you delete a file from
c:\windows\system32\dllcache, it will get restored from c:\I386. If you
really want to delete something from the system folder, first you need to
delete the file from c:\I386, (where it may be compressed), then from
c:\windows\system32\dllcache, and then from c:\windows\system32. You will
get a stern warning from microsoft about files being then wrong version, but
if you cancel that once- you will be fine.
