Epson Stylus C42UX Problem

I have an Epson C42UX. The print head (carriage) retracts to the
right side and thumps repeatedly. To make it quit I have to unplug
it. What could be causing that?
 
Have you tried lubricating the guide bar with a light coating of oil?
