Epson Stylus 950 cartridges

Hello!
First time to post here.

Does anyone know of a hack to allow Epson cartidges manufactured in Japan
for the Epson Colorio PM-950C to be used in a Stylus Photo 950?

The cartidges are idendical but the Stylus refuses to recognise the new
cartridge.

I don't know specifically, but Epson tends to add an extra contact wire
or reverse the pad sequence.

Assuming the cartridge is otherwise similar enough in its size,
positioning and size and sequencing of ink outlets and so on, why don't
you just remove the chip from the SP950 cartridges and put it on the
PM-950C cartridge (after removing its chip) if they fit in the space and
locations on the cartridge. You may need a chip resetter, if you are
using a chip from an empty SP950 cartridge. Be careful not to damage the
chip circuitboard. The chip has no connections with the interior of the
cartridge it just sits on the surface of the cartridge and is "welded"
into place with a couple of plastic welds. You can usually just stick
the chip on by using some "poster tack" or similar goop. Do make sure
it is well positioned and adhered, because if you install a cartridge
with no chip, the brittle gold plated contact wires in the printer can
be snagged and tend to snap off.

By the way, what is the advantage of the PM-950C cartridge over the
SP-950 cartridge? Did you just come upon a good source for the PM
cartridges?

It's mainly price. The Stylus cartridges in the UK (Jessops) sell for
£10.49. The cartridges in Japan sell for around 900 yen (£4.60) If I buy
bulk or sets of the 7 cartridges or the generic Ecorica (www.ecorica.jp)
then the price is probably 10-20% cheaper and much maybe more if I could buy
wholesale.

Japanese retailers are slowly picking up on international mail order but
trying to get someone to setup a website in English is usually the problem -
imagine you or I trying to make a website in Russian or Chinese.

I have been thinking whether supplying cartridges and toner to people
outside Japan would be a viable business. If anyone at this newsgroup has
encouragement or discouragement about this idea, I'd be very grateful for
the input.
