Hi All,
I have Epson 3170, using Smart Panel.
It starts the autofilename with :file0001.jpg and increments.

How do I change the count so that the saved files are file0590.jpg
(and incrementing)?

I've been scanning on my desktop, but I've moved the scanner to my
laptop so I can watch tv while scanning the photos. So I want to have
the file names synch up.

Cheers,
bob

I do not know for sure is this will work. I do not have an Epson scanner.

Try putting an old file with the name file0589.jpg to see if SmartPanel will
continue the sequence. Put the file in the same folder where the new files
are written.

Thanks for the response. This didn't work. I tried a few variations as well,
such as explicitly renaming the file in smart panel, hoping that it would catch
on (but it didn't). I also made files with the name that smart panel would
generate on the scan, but it (smart panel) did not adjust the name, it just
gave me a "file exists - rename" box.
Argh. There must be someway to find the counter for those files,
but I have grepped all the files, and searched the registry to no avail.
And there is nothing in the documention that I can find.

I guess I'll have to give customer support a call.

bob

Dewwwwwwd... you are desperate ;)

Have you downloaded the latest version of the software for this scanner? I
don't have that scanner, but other Epson scanners' software (3200, 4870,
etc.) has the "file save settings" which allow you to choose the prefix and
then the start number for the suffix.

Sounds like a good idea, I'll try to find an updated version. I currently have
version 3.0A of smart panel. And it looks like smart panel just starts
up Epson Scan when I hit the scan and save button.

Where can one find the "file save settings"?

The settings you need to change are in EpsonScan, not Smart Panel. Click on
the arrow to the right of the Scan button and choose configuration when in
Professional mode.

I'll try this as soon as I get home.
Thanks for the help!

With EPSON Smart Panel Scan & Save the main screen clearly displays a
dialog box:
FILE NAME
Prefix: File Start at: 0007

If using the EPSON Scan as a stand alone (you state you use it through
Smart Panel) then the previous post is correct, you need to access the
file save settings by clicking the little arrow to the right of the
SCAN button.

Thanks for the responses. I have been able to access the "file save settings"
when running Epson Scan as a standalone. In this mode, there are indeed
small arrows beside the scan button. This button gives access to "file save settings".

Oddly, when running the "scan and save" from the Smart Panel, these buttons
are gone, and there is no way to access the "file save settings" at all.
Also, after changing the file names in Epson Scan (standalone), those did
_not_ persist into the smart panel (i.e. when going back to smart panel,
the filenames went back to the file0020 rather than the file_0600).
So it seems there is no way to change the filenames in Smart Panel.
This is a workable solution (running the Epson Scan by itself), however I
do wish I could get the preview that smart panel provides. (and be able to
sue the handy rotate buttons too)

Tim, you say the main screen clearly displays a dialog box, but my
version does not. I have version 3.0A Do you mean the dialog box appears
on the main screen of smart panel? Or on the Scan and Save window when it
appears?

PS I just wanted to add that in spite of the filenaming annoyance, the
Epson Perfection is great (a great deal too). I usually do three photos at a
time, and the scanner is smart enough to break the three photos into 3 individual files..
At times I have put up to 8 small photos on at once, this feature is a nice time saver.
I have about 6000 photos to scan in, so I'll be at it for a while.

When using the EPSON Scan as a stand alone application you have to
nominate where the finished scan is transferred to. This is done
through the file save settings.
When using the EPSON scan through an application such as Smart Panel
it is the application that accesses the scanner so the image is
transferred to that application after scanning. If you scan from
PhotoShop you are essentially importing the image into PhotoShop
through the scanner. You will have no option within EPSON Scan to
interrupt this process so no file save settings as it is not EPSON
Scan that has control of this process when accessed by an application,
it is the application that controls this process so the application
names the file.
In EPSON Smart Panel Scan and Save this option is on the main page of
the Scan and Save. The first screen that appears gives you the options
you are after.

Thanks for the explanation Tim, makes perfect sense.
