If I plug the scanner USB in a different USB socket i/e/ from the front of the PC to the back of the PC I am asked for the location of the driver. This means putting the CD in and re-installing the Driver . Is this a normal Windows action do you think ?

I have tried both swapping when it is running or booting up with it connected.

The USB sockets at the back are on a PCI Card would that be it ?

I had that on an Abit motherboard, the usb devices were each assigned their own 'port'. I was using XP SP2.

I haven't experienced that quirk with any other board though (I think the Abit board was a KR7) I can hot swap all devices, no problem.

So yes, it may be down to the ports being on a card, but not sure.

Do usb on board ports take preference over pci usb cards, so if you put the scanner into the back card the pc would think it's a new device being connected?
