I have an Epson Perfection 4490 photo scanner that I have downloaded driver
updates for Vista from the Eson site, but the scanner won't work,
still...Vista can't find or open the file...in Device Manager says " The
drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" Any help would be
appreciated.

I have the same scanner running under Vista Ultimate x64 and it has run
fine since Vista was released. It must be the sequence in which you
connected the scanner and installed the drivers. Did you uninstall the
old driver for the scanner first? Did the scanner ever work under Vista?

Go into the Windows Device Manager from the Control Panel and remove the
scanner from the list of devices. Then uninstall the driver package if
it shows up in the Control Panel under "Programs, Uninstall a Program".
Mine shows up as "Epson Scan". Disconnect the scanner from the USB port.
Reboot. Look in the manual that came with the scanner and follow the
installation sequence EXACTLY. If this still doesn't work, there are
three main possibilities. The scanner may be broken. The USB port may be
defective. The driver package that you downloaded may be corrupt.
