What I require in order of priority is:

must be able to write to CD/dvd so I can label them
must have good (not great) colour photo printing capabilities I don't
do B/W art photography
should be a good all round colour printer - I have a laser for B/W

My son has an RX500 and apart from the first criteria it works fine.

So: Are there any reviews (I haven't found one if there is)

Are there any users of an RX700 who feel

i) it was a good decision or ii) it was a bad decision?

My OS of choice will be either linux or openbsd , both using gimpprint
drivers and cups , No windows of any type.

As a secondary question: it is rather pricey and I haven't found a
Canadian source on the web at much less than full list price. IF
someone knows of a web supplier who would discount 25% or more, I would
appreciate a pointer.

Thanks.

I can't speak for the rx700. I had a r200 which used different inks,
clearly had a different head, and a price mark so low that one would
question whether or not to buy ink or another printer with ink. But I
can saw the photo quality on the r200 was excelent. Text was
acceptable. This new rx700 has a 1.5pl drop size, so in theory
improved resolution. Epsons generally speaking require more maintance
but there is a man in this group who offers a free cleaning guide.
linuxprinting.org lists the rx500 and rx600 as "Partially" works.

Until you bought it up I was not aware epson had an AIO printer that
printed on CDs. The only printers I was aware of that printed on CDs
were the canon line of mp750 / mp760 / mp780. The feature is disabled
in north america but enabling it is very well documented on a few
websites among which is http://pixma.webpal.info/. Problem is all but
the mp780 are no longer at market, the mp760 has been superseded by the
Mp500/mp800/mp950 which are hard to find in north america and enabling
the feature is untested on these models. But linux support on these is
piss poor except for printing which is well, only somewhat. None of
these units are listed on linuxprinting.org. Canon offers linux
drivers of sorts, and there is always turboprint. Sane support near as
i'm aware is non existant.

ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/

But if you must get an AIO... even though it's not presently listed the
rx700 has the better shot of working under linux.
