I'm sorta' new at this so please bear with me. I bought a,
"refurbished", RX500, from Epson. My i year warranty expired 2 days
ago. I now get a "red" exclamation point and a message on the screen ,
"Error", Printer error, See your documention and call service if
necassary...
The printer will not work no matter what I do. I called Epson service
and told them I just wanted to know how to fix this and they told me
they could not answer unless I paid a service fee. HELP....Thanks in
advance for any help....

The error is a "Fatal Error". This normally means that a component in the
printer has failed and is irrecoverable.
When you turn the printer on does the head move around for a while? If it
doesn't then the head may be stuck, a piece of paper or similar may be in the
way.
If the head moves away from the park position, pull the power plug from the
wall or back of the printer immediately and see if the head carriage moves
freely by hand, if not, careful inspection may reveal an obstruction or very
light lubrication of the carriage bar may help (use a cloth dampened with a
general purpose light oil).
Otherwise I think you will have to see whether the supplier will honour the
warranty, it being so close to the expiry date.

Could it be the sensors that tell's the printers CPU where the hea
assembley is..?
These are usually micro-switches with a little plastic lever on the
that senses the heads position, nowadays one would expect these to b
opto-couplers

This printer uses a CR Scale (Like the encoder strip in some other printers) to
detect the carriage position. It is worthwhile cleaning this with a damp cloth
but it has to be done with great care to avoid damage or dislodging it from the
anchors and it is quite difficult to get at without removing the scanner but it
can de done with care. The strip runs through the carriage and is anchored at
both ends on the printer frame.

I had the same issue with my RX500 try
http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml for software to correct the problem
It seems that Epson has put in a counter that basically causes th
machine to commit suicide when you have used it a lot. Mine went ou
1 month after the warranty expired!

also I've seen an answer that pressing and holding th
Power,Load/eject, Stop,B&W, Color at the same time unti
"Init eeprom" appears on the printer screen. Then press th
Color button to clear the counter.
