I just got the Epson R800 (LOVE IT) and have some stock of Kodak Ultima and
Premium papers. Anyone use these together? If so what settings did you use
and were you satisfied with the results?
Thanks

will you monitor the ink consumption you experience? I was told that
even the colors that don't get used much get used up w/ the numerous
clean cycles it runs. This is what he emailed me but I'd like more
opinions before I decide on ordering one. If you email drop one of the
double n's!
It's a gas guzzler. I got the equivalent of 40
8x10's
on a magenta cartridge and by that time the gloss
optimizer was showing the yellow warning sign.
Before
I replaced the two cartridges the matte black, red
and
blue carts were just down a hair--a very thin hair.
However, after the printer went through its
convulsions of purging the new inks, the ink
indicator
showed MK, blue and red inks down a quarter. If
that
rate of lost ink in the purge continues it is very
expensive indeed. And you will be buying matte
black
carts that are never used in printing.

Thanks for any followup.

Greetings Steve,

Saw your post and thought I would share with you. I too have just purchased
a new Epson printer (R200) for me. It uses the same everything as your
printer save for all the extra features you have. Since you have purchased
some Ultima paper, I have sent along an email to you from our website that
gives you all the settings for you to use.

I would also encourage you to try the EasyShare software as the program
includes the latest printers and settings that are built into it. The R800
is a part of the One Touch system, and so those settings will enhance your
results. Regardless of the program, however, use the settings for your
driver as noted on the page I sent along. They will maximize your results.

Talk to you soon, Steve,

Hi Ron,
The R200 uses DYE based inks like most of the Epson Photo printers. The R800
uses a newer set of the PIGMENT based inks that the 2200 uses. There are
many papers that can be used in the R200/300 and older Epson printers that
are not recommended for use in the R800 and the 2200.

As a general rule of thumb across all brands of printer I would
plan on a dollar (US) or more per 8x10 photo print. On that basis
replacing a cart after 40 8x10's doesn't sound unreasonable. I've read
that the gloss tanks come 2 in a package so they should be half the
price of the colors?

For my mix of printing photos and text matte black and cyan are the
ones showing the lowest level. I haven't replaced any yet.

Is purging required if you replace the cart when it says to (which
apparently isn't really empty)?

I haven't tried any kodak paper yet. One issue in choosing paper is
longevity, and that is hard for the end user to judge. There are some
web sites that do accellerated age testing of alternate brand (ie not
the printer's own brand) paper.

I just dug out the spare set I bought with the printer. For $14.99 the
box says "2 Gloss Optimizer Cartridges" All the other colors at the
same price apparently contain 1 cart.

I called Epson Store today to order some replacement cartridges today.
They advised me that they are sold seperate.
