Epson R340 keeps resetting as default

Does anyone know if there's a registry setting or program that's
running that keeps forcing the Epson to become the default printer?
The Epson is only for photos and CDs, the HP 1100D is for text and
documents, which I want to be the default, but every so often (it
doesn't seem to be with each reboot) the Epson becomes the default
again. Does anyone know any way to 'lock' the default? (program,
registry hack, etc)

This seems operating system behavior rather than Epson
behavior so you may get better advice in a newsgroup specializing
in your OS. I run an Epson (USB) with a Brother (parallel, default)
under Win98SE and your phenomenon does not occur here.

This may seem simple minded but did you set those
defaults under Printers in the Control Panel?
That is the main place to set defaults.

What operating system are you using?

Typically you go into the printer menu and select the default printer,
and it should stay as such once you shut down your printer with that
setting, until you change it. The one currently selected typically
shows a small check mark next to its icon.

Yes. That's about the only place you /can/ change the 'default
printer'. Every 3-5 days, however, I notice when I go to print that
the Epson shows up in the dialog box instead of the HP. While this
isn't a problem for me, the other people who use the computer would
either have no clue what to do (since the Epson is usually shelved,
covered, and paperless when not in use) or waste the Epson ink (if I
happened to leave it on). I've given them instructions to watch for
it, but most people just hit print -> okay and don't bother checking
the settings. Especially since the HP's been here for over a year and
they've never had to fool with the settings. I just think it's weird
that the Epson forces itself back to default, and I suspect it may be
that the driver is checking and resetting the option every so often.

Is this in MS Office applications? They store the printer settings within
the file and will over ride your defaults.

This was a common problem when other printers were installed on the same
computer/network. There is a way to disable this but, unfortunately, I can't
rightly recall the steps.

It has something to do with the way the status monitor is configured (i
think) and it would be best to contact Epson technical support
directly...they have a document that they can send you if you contact them
via web support...
