My R300 is showing the dreaded error message "service Required". I've
googled the problem and come up with various solutions - i.e. hold down the
power, stop and paperjamreset buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds.(Don't
have a paperjamreset button) hold down 'stop' 'maintenance' and 'power'
buttons for about 10 seconds (no maintenance button). I've also downloaded
the SSC service utility but that hasn't fixed it either! Please help!

You can reset the printer with the Epson Ajustment Program. In doing so you
run the risk of leakage from the base of the printer, by this time you may
only have 15-20% space left in the waste pads. You need to have the pads
re-newed and then fit a waste bottle to the printer cutting down most of the
waste that ends in the pads. I own the R300 and suggest it is a printer that
is well worth the service cost to replace the pads.

The SSC utility usually does the job on the R300 model as I recall.

Other than the message about "service required" what is the printer
actually doing? Does it still print, doe sit communicate at all with
your computer?

My experience with most dye based printers is that the protection
numbers Epson uses are pretty conservative, especially if the build up
was over a fair amount of time. The dye inks are mainly water and
alcohol, boot of which do evaporate over time, leaving behind dye and
glycol esters that slow quite slowly.

One of the reasons Epson's protection numbers are conservative, is
because they are also guarding against a situation which has been known
to occasionally occur where continual cleaning cycles manifest, and of
course, this condition can build up a lot of ink in the waste ink pads
without any evaporation. That's rarely the case in real life.
