ALBERT C. GOOD JR.

I have a Epson640 printer that after one or two pages decides to print odd
charactors.

Sometimes turning the printer off fo about 10 sec seems to clear the problem
otherwise it requires a complete reboot of the entire system.

The printer is a and I have had it about 6 years and would replace it if it
where not for the ease of refilling its cartridges.

You could try and remove the printer software and drivers but more info is
required like Operating System, how many printers installed, in your
operating system, when did you last do a defrag of your hard drive, have you
removed the printer cable of late, have you tried a different cable, have
you upgraded your operating system of late.

System is Windows 98, only one printer on system at this time. Driver is
recent down load of less than a year ago, defrag and scan disk was no more
than two months ago. Otherwise the cable on the printer is the one that
came with it.

I have a new radioshack cable, not on the printer and of dubious
comparability. It is a:6 ft shielded RS 232 cable, with MaleDB 25 and Female
DB 25 Catalog number 26-249

Also a cable that I used on a old IBM dot-matrix printer with no trouble.

I had removed the cable when I was having trouble with the counters needing
reset.

As far as Operating system up grades, I refuse to down load any of the
Microsoft up-dates because they often cause more trouble than they are
worth.

My Stylus 600 (with W9x, NT4, XP), (immediate precursor of the 640?)
gave years of good service, but recently it started to behave like this
too, and would also print a portion of a page but then not advance the
paper while still printing.

Despite new cable etc, it got more and more frequent so finally I had to
bite the bullet and get rid of it. Very sad, but the replacement Epson
Stylus C86 is pretty good for my purposes. Much quieter and quicker too.

In that case two things come to mind, corrupted driver, or a board fault on
the printer, I still believe drivers.

Your description usually implies a broken printer driver. It is
probably worthwhile reinstalling the driver using the most current one
Epson supplies in your geographical area on their web site.

Sometimes this is an indication of a hardware malfuntion. It could be
caused by a bad cable, for instance, or a bad or improperly connected
USB splitter, and so on.

It may take a while to track it down (of course it could be a hardware
failure wthin the printer, also) but look for driver software first.
