Epson Printer wont work w/ Dell w/XP sp 2

I am having a problem, in that my computer recognizes the fact that there is
a printer installed but the printer will not operate.
Yes, I have the power on, the parallel cable hooked up, and the USB cable
installed. When I click print on a doc. (wordpad or other) I get an error
message.

What to do?
 
You say you have the parallel AND USB cables connected? May I suggest that
you use one or the other, but not BOTH.
