I have been using the Epson Stylus colour 740 without any problems for a
long time. However, I turned it on and when I printed something I had some
black smudging (only slight smudging).
Now when I print no black appears at all. I selected both Black & then
colour in the driver but still no black appears. No colour lights are
flashing to indicate that a cartridge is empty.

Have you heard of this before?
Can you please help me solve this problem?
Can you tell me what I need to do to get the printer printing black again?

Any advice will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks!

Have you taken the cartridge out and put it back in? If you have done this
then the printer doesn't know how much ink is in cart. Have you run a
nozzle check and head cleaning?

I have run the nozzle check and head cleaning a few times. To take the
cartridge out you need to move the head into the middle as I am sure is the
same with all printers. However, for some reason, you can only move the head
to the middle when the cartridge empty light is flashing. It cannot be moved
into the middle at any other time, which to me seems stupid, but what do I
know.

Any other ideas anyone?

Thanks!!

You can change the cart. at any time. Hold down the middle button on the
front of the printer. Hold it until you hear it start to move and it will
park the heads where you can change the cartridge.
