Hi,

I've got a Epson Photo 870 and it recently quit working.
It doesn't respond on anything. Windows XP doesn't recognize it.
The only thing I can do is push the Power-button; Subsequently all the led
(four) are flickering (at the same time/rythm), until I push the
Power-button again.
I've tried almost everything: removing cartridges, pushing all combinations
of buttons, connecting to others PC's etc.
It seems that the printerchip is down. Is that possible?
What can I do?

I'm pretty sure that means the ink absorbing pads underneath the platen are
saturated. I have discussed these failure symptoms with Epson UK in the past
and that's their diagnosis. The out of the book solution is for an engineer
to replace the pads (wads of tissue paper) and reset the printer, but it
would probably be more cost effective to replace the printer.

If you go to Google Groups and search for "1270 sponge counter reset" you
will find advice on resetting the printer if you want to do the job
yourself, or at least carry on printing until it is convenient to have the
printer serviced.

excellent advice from a guy on there who is a Epson Tech.

Goto the forums, its free to post.

As an Epson Tech he always says "As a qualified tech there is only so much
advice I can give, but......"

He's always bang on. As someone has said already here, sounds like your
inpads are saturaged and needs replaced, and printer reset. Cheaper to buy a
new printer.

The only problem with his advice is that because he is an Epson Tech he
is under a non-disclosure agreement, and can't tell you how simple it is
to reset the ROMs on the 870 to resolve this problem, often without
replacing the ink pads for another cycle, because Epson is very
conservative with the point they use to shut the printer down,
especially if your printer is used over several years before it gets to
the shut down protection number (because during that 2 year period, the
ink in the pads evaporates).

However, because I don't work for Epson, I can tell you that to reset
the ROM on a 1270 (and I believe the 870) require this horribly complex
process shown below:

===================
1270: Turn the power off. Press and hold the Load/Eject and Cleaning
buttons while you turn on the power. Release both buttons when the
Paper Out LED is flashing. Press and hold the Cleaning button for at
least 10 seconds.
==========

I will add the caveat that it is always possible your ink pads could
overfill and spill if you use your printer a lot in a short period of
time, and the ink could spill onto your nice furniture or Grandma's
antique hand crocheted doilies. So, you do this at your own risk. If
you think there may be a problem, I suggest you place your printer on a
plastic tray of some sort.
