Epson Photo 1400 CIS Issues

Is anyone using a CIS on the new Photo 1400? With most Epson printers,
the cover/lid of the cartridge holder is usually removed to provide
clearance for the CIS tubing. I have this printer but don't see how a
CIS can be installed on it without voiding the warranty. Any
information about your installation will be very much appreciated.

So far, I found that the left hinge unsnaps easily - as it does on
many other Epson models. The right one however, doesn't snap apart. If
you were to try to forcefully dis-assemble the right hinge you're
likely to break it. Another way to get the needed clearance of course,
would be to cut out some plastic. In either case, the warranty will be
voided.

How is this need for tubing clearance been handled on your 1400 CIS
installation?
 
Calll Epson Tech suppt and ask them. Tell them you want to install a
CIS system and you want to use relabeled ink. See if they will help you.

Hi

Asking Epson won't get you much help, as you can imagine. However why not
try the technical department of your intended CIS supplier. These bits of
kit can be quite expensive initially, so you really want to make sure it
will work on your own machine. If you are in the UK I would suggest
Permajet, they do have a very good reputation.

Thanks for the comments Roy. I have tried the CIS suppliers here in
the states, There are only two who are actually suplying them at this
time. Neither provides any information on the web about their CIS &
will not answer my direct questions about the requirements for
installation (hmmm, what are they hiding????). I will however try
Parmajet. Maybe they're more customer friendly.

That is typical service from the relabeler.  All they say is compatible but we know that is a meaningless term

I'd be using a Dremel tool with a carbide tip and have the space
right now. Test the printer first for awhile and then take the risk.
I could care less about the warranty. One way or the other, you are
modifying the printer beyond what they warrant. Man-up and take an
honest risk rather than hoping to fool somebody down the line if it
doesn't work for you.

Man up and do not be an idiot and do things only a fool would do. You
never know when you will need your warranty so I would not treat it lightly.

The way I see it; for what I paid for this 1400 (special price plus
rebate) once I save the cost of several sets of genuine Epson OEM
cartridges (6X$19.00=$114.00/set), I can afford to replace it with a
new one at no extra cost. From what I've read, this will not take very
long since it gobbles cartridges at a very fast rate.

The other way to look at this is what is the cost of having the Epson
warranty. With out the fancy math, I'm guessing it's about $90.00 per
set of cartridges (which last me less tha 2 - 3 weeks). Hell the
extended warranty on a $30,000 car is cheaper than that.

The real way to look at it is that you do not have an Epson printer but you do have a generic ink dispenser that is made by Epson.  So you get to enjoy poorer quality photos but the good newsw is they will not last as long.
 
Epson cannot and does not directly void their warranty from use of a CIS
or third party inks. They may imply they do, but the law in most
countries doesn't allow them to.

In most countries, some type of anti-trust legislation deems the ability
to use consumables other than those made or marketed by the original
equipment manufacturer protected, as long as any damage done under the
warranty isn't directly caused by the 3rd party product. Further, it is
the responsibility of the warranter to prove the 3rd party product was
responsible for damaging the product.

However, altering the physical structure of the product is another
matter, and that may indeed void the warranty.

But in most cases that is exactly what happens.
Further, it is the responsibility of the warranter to prove the 3rd

Most likely you will need to break it and remove the cover,

According to Epson user manual -

"This warranty does not cover ribbons, ink cartridges or third party
parts, components, or peripheral devices added to the Epson product
after its shipment from Epson, e.g., dealer or user-added boards or
components. Epson is not responsible for warranty ... should the
product fail to function properly as a result of... interaction with
non-Epson products".

I did not see anything about voiding the warranty, except when the
failure is caused by third party ink. The problem is, can they tell?
or will they bother to find out if you are using 3rd party or not?

Another way is to purchase extend warranty from store like compUSA,
Fry's. 45 dollars only and you can exchange a new one if anything
wrong.
