I got an Epson 4180 scanner, and I am trying to set it up in linux. I
don't a working Windows setup right now, so I don't have that to fall
back on.

I got xsane to see my scanner, but it segfaults when I try to open it
up there. I have it set up in the under libusb and the epson_sane
backend, not epson_kowa.

So, I pulled down VueScan, which claims to have Epson 4180 support.
However, when I open it up, it says, "No scanner found." What am I
missing?

i don't have a epson scanner, but i use vuescan under linux for my scan
dual iv. try to run vuescan as root, if vuescan see the scanner, then
you want to set up the hotplug correctly. following the link in the
vuescan release note under the linux section.

I downloaded vuescan-8.1.4 last night, and I got the same results as
8.1.3. I ran vuescan as root, and it still says "no scanner found."
Does the 4180 have firmware like the 3170? I saw something in the
release notes for the linux version about getting a firmware file for
the 3170.

Hello,

Sorry for my bad english .. frenchy

I have the same problem, vuescan-8.1.4 does'nt found my Minolta Scan

Strangely, an older version of vuescan,7.6.74 works fine with the
minolta but dont see the snapscan.
I use Mandrake 10 but i have tested vuescan-8.1.4 under Fedora core 2
and it's the same, it see the snapscan but not the minolta.
Of course i have tested both system as root.

Any help is welcomme

Well, I think if you can't find a SANE backend that supports the
scanner, Vuescan won't see it. At least, I think that's the case for
the Epson 4180. It does require firmware, like the Epson 3170.
Theepkowa backend is supposed to support the 4180 Real Soon Now, so
maybe Vuescan will work after that.

It finds my Scan Dual 2 just fine.
To have it working as user I needed to add myself to group that owns
/dev/usb/scanner0 (which was 'scanner') and a following line into
/etc/hotplug/usb/libsane.usermap (all in one line!):
- -
libusbscanner 0x0003 0x0638 0x026a 0x4000 0x0000 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00000000
- -

Before that it worked only as root.
Of course i have tested both system as root.

Weird. Do you see the scanner with 'lsusb' (it will say something like:
"Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0638:026a Avision, Inc. Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II")

If so, do you have libusb installed? (I think vuescan wouldn't
even start with libusb missing..)
