My Epson Perfection 2480 Photo USB 2.0 scanner is linked to 3.0 GHz Dual
Processor Intel machine with 1.0 Gbyte of RAM running WinXP Pro w/ SR-2.

The scanner does an ok job of fulfilling my basic scanner needs when it
works, but nearly every day the software locks up. Software says
"Scanner is warming up," green light flashes, then red light flashes and
nothing further happens. Sometimes I can get it to work by repeatedly
turning the scanner off and then on again, and re-launching the
application software. Some times I've gotten it to work merely by
closing all applications before re-starting the machine. At other times,
the only way to get the scanner to work is to completely turn off the
power to my computer, and do a cold reboot.

I suspect there is a conflict between one of these applications and the
scanner software: Sidekick98, Copernic desk top search, Microsoft Photo
Editor 3, or Irfanview, but despite many time consuming attempts, I have
been unable to establish a clear cause and effect relationship. I have
downloaded and installed epson11617 which is supposed to be a software
upgrade.

Can anyone suggest the source or cure to this problem. Am I likely to
have the same problem with other TWAIN compliant scanners? I don't want
to replace this scanner and find the same problem again.

? ?I don't want
to replace this scanner and find the same problem again.

If you are not you need to start up the scnner and let it settle down
before starting the computer. Sometimes just a reboot of the computer
will suffice if the scanner is all settled down and ready to go.

Thanks for your input, but the point is that I don't want to have to
"just a reboot of the computer" prior to scanning. It makes for an
awkward work flow to have to save up items to be scanned for the next
morning when the machine will have had a fresh start.I'm always careful not to power up the scanner before I've got the
desk-top up and running. My issue with the scanner is that it rarely
works except shortly after the computer has been restarted. If I've
been working on some project for a few hours, and I need to add an image
of an item, most often I must halt what I'm doing and restart the
machine. Sometimes, when I've been running many different applications
on my machine during a full day worth of work, I need to cold boot my
computer to get the scanner to work.

I'd like to figure out the root cause of the problem, so if I replace
the scanner with an automatic sheet feed, I don't run into the same
problem again.

Memory and/or memory management? A reboot might be the solution.
