Epson Perfection 1650 problem

I can't scan using any of the buttons on the scanner or by opening Epson
Smart Panel. The message I get is "File.exe has encountered a problem and
needs to close." The only way I can scan is to open PSP8 and use
import>acquire.

I have XP with 512 RAM, 40 gig HD, which is about half full. I tried
uninstalling the scanner and software and reinstalling it, but that still
didn't work. I haven't used the scanner in a while, but when I first got
it, it worked okay. Any suggestions?

I am using a 1650 under W98. I discovered that a copy of ebveryting
scanned ended up in my windows temp file. thus I have to empty it
periodically ot I get an error message when trying to scan. Do not
know whether this might apply with XP as I have no experience of it.
