My Epson Stylus photo 785EPX, 42 month old, has started to make an unusual
noise when first turned on.
sounds like a distant siren, whoopa whoopa whoopa, then goes away. The beast
still prints fine but am wondering if its about to hatch? Suspect something
has dried out but havn't got a clue.

If the noise coincides with the carriage moving on the carriage bar you could
try to lubricate the bar with 3 in 1 or light engine oil. Just dampen a cloth
with the oil and wipe it on the bar, be careful not to let any oil drip into
the printer. Otherwise not sure what it could be.

Although I am unsure exactly what the sound it, it may be part of the
initial cleaning cycles, and you may be hearing the air entering the
cartridge through the air exchanger within the cartridges. It may
change or go away with a new cartridge or an emptier one.
