I am trying to get an Epson LX-400 printer to work under Windows 98.

The printer worked perfectly under Windows XP, and I have tried another
printer (Lexmark 2030 Inkjet) on that Windows 98 machine - and it worked
fine.

In conclusion, there is nothing wrong with the printer (it worked under XP)
and there is nothing wrong with either the cable or port (both worked fine
with another printer). Both computers have been set up with ECP as the type
of printing in the BIOS settings.

The Lexmark printer is currently installed on the machine. When I try to
print from the Epson, it simply tells me that another service is making use
of the LPT1 port and that I should free it up before making use of it (for
the Epson), yet there is absolutely nothing actually using that port at all!
I have loaded the default drivers that came on the Windows 98 disk.

Does anyone have any idea what I could do to get this printer to work on the
Windows 98 machine? If it needs an updated driver for some reason, is there
anywhere I can get it from? Although www.epson.co.uk says the drivers are
there...it throws back a message saying that the site could not be found
(for that particular driver), and I have had no success of finding the most
updated drivers for the Epson LX-400.

If anyone could help, it would be *most* appreciated.

Thanks.

Try uninstalling all other printers that have been installed on that
machine and reboot. Is there any other device configured to use that
port? Also set the BIOS to EPP, most printers run far better at that
setting. But my guess is that it doesn't like the fact there is
another printer installed. My old Epson dot matrix refused to work
with Canon laser printer installed. Another thing to check is under
the Start button>Printers etc, when you right click the Epson printer
to bring up properties, make sure the printer isn't set to print to
file. You can sometimes get away with changing the other printer,
e.g. the Lexmark to print to file rather than uninstalling the driver
etc. If that doesn't work, try the uninstall Lexmark and any other
printers in the list. Always reboot after.
