I'm the 'proud' possessor of the above printer (3 in 1) and (needless
to say) it has stopped working. It tells me that 'parts need
replacement' without stating what the parts are. Can anyone explain in
simple language how I can resolve the problem ie get it going again.
From discussions with a friend of mine who frequently buys printers etc
for his workplace, I gather that Epsons are a nightmare and he (and I)
won't ever buy one again. However I'm stuck with the present one and
would really appreciate any advice you can give. Cheers. Ken

This error is nearly always caused by a Waste Ink Counter overflow.
The printer produces waste ink which is stored in absorbent pads in the base of
the printer, a count of the amount of waste ink is kept by the printer in the
Waste Ink counter (this count is at best approximate). When the printer
believes the pads are nearly full it posts this error and refuses to print. In
an ideal world you would need to remove the covers and replace the pads and
then reset the counter. There are several pads and there is quite a bit of
dissasembly required to get the job done.
In my experience you can avoid replacing the pads once, and only once, and just
reset the counter. If you do this the printer will once again function and you
will eventually get the same message again, at that time pad replacement is a
must or you risk ink overflow into the printer. The printer does not have any
way of knowing how much ink is in the pads, it relies on the counter to
estimate the volume of ink so it cannot know whether the pads have been
physically replaced.
There are two reset methods that I know of.
1. Go to http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml and download the utility, this
claims to reset the counter. Sometimes this utility is difficult to use in that
the error condition prevents the urility from communicating with certain
printer models. I do not know whether this is one of those models.
2. Use a specialised maintenance utility for this printer. You need to install
this utility and get into the special menu that allows waste counter reset. If
you would like this utility please e-mail me.

So we have an Epson all-in-one, its stopped working and it tells yo
it wants a part replacement..
but problem is you are not telling us what part it wants now thi
would make life a lot easier if we knew or at least any error codes

What actually happens, does it start banging and clodding ink tank
about the place yelling I want a new part...

I, like you won't be buying any Epson products for a long time, a ver
long time

Unfortunately Epson does not say what parts need replacing, they just post this
rather cryptic message and start the error light blinking.
Fortunately it is always (in my experience) a maintenance request which means
that the waste counter has overflowed.

Chances are your printer has reached the waste ink pad protection numbers.

All the waste ink is drained into a diaper under the main printer.

When the number is reached, the printer shuts down to prevent additional
waste ink from being added, as it could leak out of the base of the
printer and mess up your furniture, carpet, etc.

There is a software program that might allow you to reset this number
(It works for some printer models, but not all). Even if you do reset
it, you should be aware the ink could start to leak out of the bottom,
so you may wish to either extend the waste ink tube outside the printer
and place it in a bottle or replace the diaper (costly to have done
professionally) or just hope for the best and put the printer onto a
large tray.

The software I mentioned is to be found from the following url:

http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml

It comes from Russia.

Hi Tony, thanks for the advice, but the error does prevent use of the
'ssclg' utility. There is just a red '!' (exclamation mark) light
which comes on as soon as I switch the printer on and it won't respond
to anything. I couldn't actually get your full email address. Maybe
you could send it to me if that's ok. Ken

I too have had it for about a year, although it gets a lot of use,
and I also have been using compatibles. Cheers, Ken

Hi again Tony, You've been very helpful, thanks for that, but I
still can't seem to get your full email address as part of it seems to
be missing. Any chance you could email it to (e-mail address removed).
I'd be eternally grateful. Thanks again - Ken
