epson C82 printing color when I've told it to print "black ink only"

Any idea why this is happening?

I've double checked the properties for this and confirmed it is configured
to print black in only.

Also - i'm using 3rd party ink cartridges and I get smearing on my text
assigned to pitch = 8. Is there just one manufacturer doing the 3rd party
cartridges so I'm stuck with this quality? Yes - i've cleaned the heads
repeatably and I just don't get consistent quaility here. Sometimes it
smears..and sometimes it comes out excellent.

Some applications override printer settings and sometime printer settings
override applications.
Make sure that BOTH are configured for black.
