epson c82; cleaning

Has anyone just 'ripped' into a C82 and cleaned the heads?

I see a pad on the 'parked' side of the rail thats wicks the
ink - its packed with goo. After I clean it should it be
saturated with something?

If I get the heads out what do I soak them in?

Thanks for any ideas (I don't mind the time to fix this. If
I break it no big deal - doesn't work anyways and is not under
warranty)

The best known solvent for your goo is as always Windolene the clear window
cleaning fluid or the cleaners and clog busters such as the JetTec supplied
free with inks.
On the left you will also find a well which fills with ink: use cotton buds
to remove this mixed goo - you'll need quite a lot. Removing the printhead
is not necessary or to be advised. A thorough clean can just as easily be
accomplished with a spare cartridge filled with the solvent and print a few
windy pages -that way you clean from within.
