I have decided to help a friend who has just installed XP on his pc and
has an Epson C60 printer. At first i thought the problem with the
computer not seeing the printer was down to him not using original
epson cartridges. I bought some, the same problem still happens. I have
tried firstly uninstalling then resinstalling the software from disc.
the step where the computer searches the ports to add the printer to
its list, the computer just halts. I have then then pressed the button
which skips this procedure to do a manual installation. The computer
continues loading software and appears to install ok. The control panel
shows the logo for the printer with a tick next it. The properties
shows a tick next to LPT 1 with the printer next it in the list. Why
does it not see it? When i go to page set up or print, the printer is
selected in the choice box. It does not however allow me to clean
heads, show ink levels etc. it just reports a breakdown in
communication. Is there something i am missing? Why is the computer not
automatically installing the printer from the start? please any ideas?
The USB lead is Ok, have tested it at work.thanks all Jim

I'll reply to my own message as no-one elses has an answer. I tried
loads of varioations of setting up the printer, in the end just put a
parallel cable on instead of the usb, seems to work fine, appart from
the fact it will not show me the ink levels option. But hey, thats ok,
lets live on the edge. I think the usb problem was down to the bios,
but because i have had no guidance how to sort this out properly, i'll
forget it.

Thanks for your reply, thought as much.
I don't know about 'Today is the first day of the
rest of your life' - I was under the impression it wanted me end my
life, bloody thing, make life simple, another motto bill gates should
have look at.

There should be a separate utility at the Epson website for your printer
called Status Monitor. Download and install this and you should be able to
check the ink cartridge levels.
