Epson C60 clogged heads

I'm having a terrible time with my Epson C60. I knew nothing about printers
and everytime I left it for a week, it just stopped printing. From reading
the group, I now see that the cause is drying out. I keep replacing
cartridges- sometimes it prints black ok - then two minutes later no black!
then no yellow - so I clean nozzles, then banded black returns then it
disappears again. Then it comes back a bit and so on. All the ink is going
down (the cost!) with nozzle cleaning and I can't even write a clean looking
letter.

My question is: is it completely damaged and useless now or is there any
remedial action I can take myself.

Would be very grateful for any advice.

With the C60 it is possible and recommended to use an old cartridge filled
with a mild ammonia solution such as Windolene and print a few pages so that
the nozzles are cleaned from within.
As you are in the UK it may be best also to consider the JetTec - my vested
interest declared as I distribute them from www.inkylink.co.uk . Some
further tips are on the Epson quirks pages.
JetTec now also include a special cartridge flush ( free) with ink packages
and this is tried and tested for blockages and flushing out old ink from
cartridges for refilling.
That way you'll save some 50% over Epson OEM stuff and still be guaranteed
the quality of a brand leader.

All the Epsons I have can last for few weeks without printing and they
never give me any problem (sometime I forgot the 500 for 2-3 months and
it never complains either, and I always refill).

About the clogging problem, many people suggest to print something
about once every 1-2 weeks to keep the print head from getting dried.
You DO NOT want to take the cartridge IN/OUT every time you see the
problem, and if you do then give it few hours resting to get rid of the
air before printing.

This is strange - I did a search on C60, clogged nozzles, epson etc. and
found many similar stories to mine. Tales of constant nozzle cleaning and
non printing after only a few days idle. So what other factors could be
involved? Why do so many people get the same problems and yet another large
sample - none. Is it using non-epson cartidges - mine came from Staples a
major UK office supplies chain. Could temperature have any impact - we have
had many cold nights in the UK in recent months. Could it be heat from a
close by radiator. Example - two people leave their printers for two weeks;
one dosen't print. Could the difference be the room temperature. There must
be an answer as the result is quite catastrophic, rendering a printer
unusable without warning.
