Epson 777i

Apparently this Epxon printer will not print black when its color
cartridge is empty or not working. Since I rarely have use for color
printing, the color cartidge usually dries out before I use its ink.
Color cartridges being relatively expensive I was wondering if there
is some way to trick the 777i into thinking it has a full cartridge?
Leaving the empty/dried carftridge in the printer does not do the
trick.

If you simply remove it and reinstall, it will reset the level, but I
advise you to be very careful about doing this. You are likely to forget
to replace it and end up running it dry. This will lead to a serious
plug either from dried ink or an air pocket. When ink for this printer
is so freakin cheap there really isn't any good excuse not to stock up
on some cartridges (ink tanks). I've been using Voltexx generics for
Epson 740s for over 3 years without any trouble.

You are obviously not familiar with the 777i. It has a chip which prevents
it from being reset by simply removing and reinstalling it. There is some
software by a company called Nomi (I think) that can reset the chip... it's
floating around out there somewhere... I don't have a link to any reset
software but Google is your best friend.

You are correct, I was not aware it was chipped. Is this the reset
software you use?

Actually, that looks much more feature rich than the last one I used... came
with an ink refill kit I tried a couple of years ago. The 777i is just a
backup printer hanging off my daughters system and only gets used enough to
keep it from clogging permenently so I've not used it much... but this does
look like a better than what I had been using. The nomi software required
hooking the printer via parrallel port as it wouldn't work over usb. It also
wouldn't seperate out functions to each colour... just reset the cartridge
to new and that was it. Thanks for the link... I may take this software for
a spin.
