Let's start again. Previous q+a vanished from my NG page.
Epson color stylus 740; top little red light by the stack of paper
symbol is steady on, but paper is loaded; green on/off light is
blinking. Turned machine off, then back on: machine goes through startup
dance, stops, lights return to as described.
I have tossed prefs, no change.

Gents,
As I returned to this newsgroup I find my message but not your kind
replies. That's OK, I copied the text. Just saying they don't appear to
me anymore. Maybe that's how this news app works.
What is the little lever that goes from 0 to + ? Paper thickness? Where
are instructions?
By now i have fixed the paperjam which was probably just dust in the
sensors. I have become able -finally- to use my good ol' utilities which
were unavailable for a long time. Gutenprint says it cannot find an
Epson printer it should be concerned about! That's OK, but..
Now i am unable to print black ink. I know someone just said "some new
cartridges are just no good" but give me the procedure to clean the head
or whatever it is that sticks up into the cart. Got plenty Windex, art
brush..
Thanks again
Dan

This is a "Paper Out" condition. If this is like most Epson inkjets
(indeed
most inkjets) there is a paper sensor that is probably stuck, often
caused by a
tiny scrap of paper stuck in the paper path. Removing the cover may
assist in
finding it. There are only four screws holding the cover in place, put
the
paper lever to +, remove the screws and lift the cover off carefully
whilst
pulling it towards the front to avoid colliding with the carriage.

As Tony suggested, This lighting sequence on the 740 indicates a "paper
out" condition.
Is you printer attempting to move paper into a loaded condition, and yet
failing to do so, or possibly slipping and loading it late? If so, you
may get this paper out notification as well as Tony's explanation that
the sensor is being jammed or is misinforming the printer due to
something in the path.
Do make sure the path is clear of anything that could either block the
paper loading path, or otherwise mis-position the paper sensor.
Sometimes the sensor gets pushed out of place by a bad paper load
attempt.
If the printer attempts to load paper several times but then manifests
this lighting sequence, the paper loading rollers need a good cleaning.
