I've got a 7 yr old Epson color stylus 600 which has started to
misprint, making loud noises sounding like the carriage feed slamming
against the sides of the unit.

After posting on windowsbbs.com in the hardware section, someone
referred me to http://www.inkjetart.com/tips/cleaning/Image02.html.

Have gotten as far as trying to remove the second metal bar with the
black 'rollers' on it and find it won't come out. Maybe because I don't
know how to move my ink cartridges away from the right end of the
printer.

Am hoping to do a thorough cleaning and get more years out of this
printer. Am stuck not knowing how to continue taking things apart
though.

Thanks in advance.

Hi.

If you don't even know how to move the Carriage by hand (press the little
lock button somewhere on left of it), I wonder if you should be trying to
repair it.

Certainly you do not have anything to lose, because it is so old, and it is
probably unrepairable. It would certainly be uneconomic to have it repaired
professionally.

Printers are now so inexpensive, you should just buy a new one. The R800 is
an excellent machine and will print hundreds of times better than your 600.

I know because I owned a Photo 700 for a few years, and the difference
between it and the 1290, which replaced it, was like night and day. I am now
thinking about gettting an R1800 which is even better.

Chances are you do NOT need to dismantle your printer to fix this
problem, in fact, I strongly suggest against doing so for numerous reasons.

The description you gave sounds indicative of a dry head carriage guide bar.

This is the large cylindrical bar that the head carriage rides on via
some brass bushings.

If you cannot figure out how to unlock the head carriage, look closely
at the left side of the carriage when it is in the parked position. You
will see a small white "prong" extending from under the metal "floor" of
the printer. If you gently push this prong down (it either goes toward
you or away, but either way it can be moved relatively easily so do not
force it). Once it is pressed below the metal sheet metal surface, the
head should be able to pass it.

Now, get a lintfree rag or paper towel, and dampen it with a bit of
rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol. Then rub the chrome plated guide bar to
remove any dried lubricant or dirt. Then using something like sewing
machine or 3in1 oil, place a few drops to either side of the bushings
where they ride on the guide bar. Then add a couple of more drops on
the guide bar. With the head carriage no longer locked, gently move the
head carriage back and forth on the guide bar to distribute the oil.
One it is well distributed, return the head all the way to the right
side of the printer, plug it back in and turn it back on, and it should
be OK. Try to keep that area clear of pet hair, paper dust, etc, and
occasionally give it a cleaning.
