Can any Epson 4870 owner tell me, whether they got those periodic
forward/backward movement of the scanhead (that usually happens, when the
scanner gets data faster than it can transfer to the PC), when doing f.e. a
whole-width 600 dpi RGB scan with descreening.
Did this happen with an USB 1.1, 2.0 and Firewire as well?

Greetings

Hi Peter ,

I`m new to the scanning thing but I hope this answers your question.

Using Epson scan & my 3 day old 4870 I scanned the cover of a PC Authority
mag at the following settings.

Document type - Reflective
Document source - Doc` Table
Auto Exposure Type -Photo
Image Type - 24bit color
Resolution - 600dpi
Target size - Original ( A4 )
Descreening filter - On
Screen Ruling - General

P.C. is Duron 900 , 256 ram and scanner is connected via Firewire.

I did not get any start/stop just a slow continuious scan from one end to
the other.

I hope that is the info you required , If not shoot me an e-mail and I`ll
run another test for you.

cheers

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

thanks for your test.
I did not get any start/stop just a slow continuious scan from one end to
the other.

That sounds promising :)

It still could be, that the Epson isn't any faster than my Agfa but is
capable to slow down its stepper motor to a lower value than my Agfa can.

So to compare performance, can you please tell me the total scanning
times, e.g. time from the first to the last movement of the scan head
and, if different, the time from firing the scan command to display the
scan on your PC for your cover scan?

Thanks for your help.

Greetings

Hi Peter ,

O.K. , using the same settings & pic........

Time taken from clicking the "Preview" button to image on screen - 7
sec

Time taken from pressing "Scan" button to first noticeable movement of
scan head - 10sec

Remaining time to scan complete 2:30 sec

Total 2:47sec give or take 1 or 2 secs` as I was using the kitchen clock
which is analogue with a second hand.

Does this help ??

Hi Andrew,

many thanks for your testing.

To my surprise my old Agfa Scanner wasn't so bad when comparing scan
times. About 2:30sec pure scan time without Preview plus 0:30sec sec for
saving/displaying the scanned image (very old and slow Mac).
Unfortunately this was only true when using the original Agfa SW, which
doesn't work with Mac OS X. With Vuescan the scan time was about 9
minutes. So it looks like using the Agfa with Vuescan on OS X is not a
real option. I'll have a closer look on the 4870.

Greetings

Peter
