I had a print job get started when there was no paper in the printer. I
did the usual and purged the job from the printer queue.

Not sure if this is the root cause or just coincidence but I now get a
"unknown error" message whenever I attempt to print anything.

I've pulled the power plug from the wall, pulled the USB cable from the
computer, pulled both plugs, removed the printer from the list of
printers and reinstalled after a fresh bot. I;ve rebooted the machine
from cold several times.

Problem still persists.

Can anyone suggest what I can do next.

I've just gone out and spent hard-earned dollars for new cartridges so
ahving a totally dead printer is not amusing.

Thanks in advance!

Test its deadness!
Go and see a neighbour / friend / relative / colleague and test your
printer on his PC.

Are you getting any red lights when you turn the printer on?

For earlier Epsons there was an EPROM reset sequence to reset he electronics
to factory specs. It amounted to holding several keys while turning the
power on. Possibly it will correct the possum status of your printer.

I'll list the sequence below that was used for the Epson 740. Perhaps your
printer uses either the same combination or something similar.
This document is from the year 2000.
The issue regarding the EPSON STYLUS COLOR 740 SE can be resolved by
performing a Master EPROM Reset.

To perform a Master EPROM Reset:

1. Turn the printer off.
2. Disconnect the cable that connects from the computer to the printer.
3. With the printer turned off, hold down both the Paper and the Cleaning
Buttons at the same time.
4. Continue to hold the buttons and turn the printer on.
5. When the Paper Light begins to flash, release both the Paper and
Cleaning Buttons.
6. Immediately press the Paper Button once (All the lights will flash and
the printer will begin to charge).
7. When the Power light becomes steady, print.

If this does not resolve the issue, the printer does need to be serviced.
The SC740 SE has an excellent 1 year Whole Unit Exchange Warranty. To
expedite the warranty service, contact the Epson Connection @ 562-276-1300,
Monday - Friday, 6am - 8pm, PST.

Should you require further assistance with this issue, please use the
"Reply With History" option, including your previous e-mail with your new
request. If you have a different technical support issue, please submit
another E-form via our website (http://www.epson.com), and we will respond
in a timely manner. Thank you again for contacting Epson.

I don't know which OS you are using, so this is vague.

Check that the printer driver printing queue is empty. There may be a
corrupted print file still in it. If one is found manually remove it
via the menu bar at the top of the window.
