Epson 3170 Twain inaccessible for OCR

I have just replaced a HP Scanjet by an Epson Perfection 3170 Photo scanner.
It works fine for straight image capture, both through the Epson smart panel
and Photoshop Elements 2.0 but my TextBridge OCR application cannot access
the scanner when I try to set it up - it sees the Twain Epson 3170 Rev 1.0
(TWAIN) Source but reports that it cannot find it to access. TextBridge
worked well with the HP Twain source.

If I invoke the FineReader OCR application (through Smart Panel) bundled
with the Epson software and installed with the package, the FineScan Manager
also reports "Can't open TWAIN source".

I have re-installed all the Epson software but get the same results.

I am using an Intel P4 with XP Home.

I'm getting desperate as I really need the OCR function so if anyone can
point me in the right direction I would be grateful. Thanks.

You may need the ASPI layer.

Thanks so much for your response - in fact I cured the problem late last
night and intended to post in case someone else had the problem.

Your links were right on, the problem lay with the driver as distributed on
the CD supplied with the printer - constructed last November. I had even
downloaded a driver for the printer from an Epson driver site, which had not
cured the problem. Then I found a different driver on the UK Epson site that
was a later version (V1.25). Installing this completely cured the problem,
which I suspect was an XP incompatibility when not interfacing with anything
other than known graphics applications, e.g. Photoshop, that was corrected
in the new version.

Thanks again for your help - much appreciated.
