Is it necessary to scan anything in 48 bit color with Epson 3170? Since
there isn't much a guide that comes with the scanner, I want to know if
the scanner can do the RAW format. If not, which scanner from Epson
does do RAW?

All EPSON Scanners output in RGB. It is not possible to select a different output.

You can use the HDR output function in Silverfast SE (and Ai I assume) or
the raw data output with Vuescan. These are supposed to just output the raw
CCD data. Both software packages have demo versions available on the net.

I tried out silverfast. It works great and It's very stable. Too bad
it has watermark. And too bad it doesn't come with Epson 3170. I might
have to return this unit and get one with Silverfast. I just don't feel
that good about Epson Scan.

Click the button "configuration" when in ***Pro mode***. Check the
radiobutton for "No colorCorrection".

Go back into the main dialog : Choose 48 Bit color in the Imagetype.

This is certainly enough and as close to a RAW that you can get.
Profile that and be happy.
