Due to a printing crisis (R200 packed up in the middle of a print run,
3 days after buying 2 new complete sets of carts aaargh!) I had to get
a new printer in a hurry and chose an Epson R285..

I subsequently purchased some Inkrite replacement cartridges that, I
was assured, were compatible with the printer. They don't work - none
of them are recognised by the printer.

Is there a trick to changing over? I read somewhere that when you go
from Epson -> compatible you should initially change all six at once,
which is what I did.

Have I missed something?

FWIW, the carts are advertised as being compatible with both the old
and new chip formats.

I have the same problem with the Epson R285. I too had seen the
suggestion that all 6 are replaced at the same time, has anyone tried
this ? I am reluctant to risk 6 cartridges at once !
I have tried to return the Inkrite cartridges for exchange for genuine
Epsons but not getting much luck yet.
Also take a look at http://forum.vnunet.com/thread.jspa?messageID=689769.
I am watching for a solution.
Alan.

Oh you are playing double jeapordy.  First the R200 and now with an R285

that, I was assured, were compatible with the printer. They don't work

That is ok news.

Here is the good news.

Get Epson carts that are specified in the printer manual and you should not have any more problems.

You need to go from UNcompatible >>> Epson and change all six at once.
