My 1670 decided to corrupt the registry of my Win98 system. Half way through
a scan the comp halts reboots and then does a scandisk and reports a problem
with the registry which it promptly repairs and then botts as normal, until
hte next time I try to do a scan.

Any suggestions whould be much apreciated.

Remove all of the Epson 1670 software.
Scan the registry for any Epson entries. I do not know what name Epson gives
the Scanner files. Look for those files.

Do a scan of the Win98 system files. You may need your Windows 98 CD.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information. On the Tools
menu there are two things of interest, Registry checker and System File
Checker. Run each in turn. Registry Checker first.

Download and install a new version (2.34A) of the Epson 1670 software from
the Epson web site.

In addition to CSM1's excellent suggestions, try searching the ".inf"
file that came with the device driver installer - if you can find it.
You may find registry keys in there, or GUIDs (those long strings that
begin and end with braces {...}) that are used as keys in the registry.
That may lead you to other places that the Epson installer modified,
or failed to modify.

Also check c:\Windows\logs\setupapi.log. See if there's an entry in it
for when the driver was installed. Maybe there are some error messages
that will help you diagnose the problem.

Calling Epson is another possibility if your scanner is new and under
warranty, but I wouldn't pin much hope on it. What they'll be able to
do is walk you through a clean uninstall and install - which may or may
not be helpful for your specific problem.

Thanks guys for the excellent and prompt replies, I try to avoid calling
support centres only as a last resort, they're usually premium rate and the
first contact is usually reading from a script. My experience anyway,
perhaps I'm an old cynic.

Cheers again

Peter.

PS I'll post a reply when I've done all the above.

Still no luck, is there a possibility that the software inside the scanner
could have been corrupted by some means down the usb cable?? Clutching at
straws here.

That sounds like a very slim straw indeed. I'd be astounded if that's
the case. You can verify that the scanner's okay by installing it on a
different computer. But I can't see how the problem you experienced in
the registry could be caused by any software running anywhere else but
in the computer.

I assume you already tried what CSM1 suggested - downloading the latest
driver.

I've run out of ideas.

Do not give up on the scanner until you have done a clean install of
Windows.

Clean install means to format the Windows HD partition (For Windows 98 = C:)
and install Windows then all of your programs. After installing from the
Windows CD, go to Microsoft Windows Update and do all of the critical
updates before installing programs.

There are lots of things that can go wrong in a Windows Operating System
that can not be fixed any other way.

I think the you may have Windows problems instead of scanner software
problems.
I know that the software from Epson is problem free, so if you are still
having problems with the scanner, if more likely that Windows is screwed up.
