I'm afraid it may be the print head is clogged. The utility to clean the
heads doesn't seem to do the trick. It prints fine in color, but of course,
no black, so prints are crappy. Is there any easy way to manually unclog the
printer head? If not, any idea what it would cost to have the repair shop do
it?

Well, if the printhead is "broken" it would be about $94USD for the printhead
part, plus whatever they steal from you for labor. Probably cost above
$250USD to replace the printhead, including the head.

You could try using an ammonia based window cleaner and some kind of
absorbent towel. Make the towel thick enough to contact the print head, then
soak it with the cleaner. Then manually park the head on top of the towel,
and let sit. Change the towel when it is soaked with ink. Then try to see if
it works. Also put a few drops of cleaner onto the capping station to soak
down into the "sponge". it could be that your waste ink system is clogged,
and the printer is not pulling the ink from the printhead.

There is a microfuse on the printhead circuit board that sometimes goes if
there is a short in the head. Or the control cable could have been damaged.
You should be able to see any damage to the cable.

You can BUY a service manual for that printer for under $25USD on Ebay.
Replacing the head is more complex than can be discussed with text only
messages.
