It's possible that they head is near done. But not too likely. Could just be
the inks. Is it worth running a real Epson cartridge through it to find out?
I have only used pigment inks with my 1520 since the first cartridges ran
out, so I can't help you with the ink type. If it is clogging a lot, it might
be time to clean the capping station and replace the tubing in the pump.

It also wouldn't hurt to run a set of cleaning carts through your machine. If
you have any empties around, you could make them yourself with windex or
comparable ammonia water cleaners. Or you could buy cleaning fluid from some
place like mediastreet.com .

I've been thinking of trying to make my own cleaning carts, have you done this?
How do you get all the old ink out of the empty cart?

I cut the tops off, and washed the foam until no more color came out. Then
let it dry for a few days.put the foam back in, fill with cleaner, then tape
the tops back on. If you don't put the tops back on, it makes a mess. The
foam is not essential for the cleaning carts, but the tops are! Works good
enough for a good flush, and that is all it needs to do.

Just cut along the seam between the top and the sides. In the color cart,
there is glue on the ribs between the tanks, so you will have to force that
one a little.

Sorry about all the questions, but I'd really like to know.

What type
of tool do you use to cut the tops off? Exacto knife? The plastic on my
C80 carts is pretty thick. Tiny hacksaw? What do you use for cleaning
fluid? I've been told not to use windex or alcohol, but to use a special
cleaning fluid designed specifically for Epson printers.

I'm thinking there will be problems taping the tops back on, with fluid
sloshing out of the carts at the open seam, and dissolving the bond
between plastic and tape. A bit of foam would help prevent sloshing?

thanks for any replies

I think I might have used an X-acto knife or maybe something slightly
heavier. I seem to remember that it was not all that hard to cut through and
pry off the lid on the black cart, but the color gave me some trouble. If you
really want to be proper then you should get special cleaning fluid. I have
used both, and before putting an ink cartridge back in after the Windex
cleaning, I always flush the heads with Jet Jrano from www.Mediastreet.com.
Never had a problem after using the Jet Jrano, and it is all I use to clean
my 9500. The foam is in the cartridge to prevent sloshing, and maybe to help
control the flow of ink into the heads.
