Epson 1270. Last resort steps

I have an Epson 1270 that really hasn't been right for over a year. Head
clogs, splotches, a general mess.

I'm really about to toss it into the garbage bin, but before I do I was
going to try one more thing. If nothing else, it should be a bit fun :)

I'm going to tear the whole thing apart, or as much as needed, to remove the
print head and all the other ink-massaging parts, sponges, etc... and simply
clean everything as best possible, and then put it back together.

If I break it, I don't care. I'll continue with my plan to toss it.
If it doesn't fix it, I don't care. I'll continue with my plan to toss it.
If it does fix it, I'll use it until it screws up again (and I have no doubt
it will given my experience with epsons).

Has anyone done this?

I took it out of the closet this last weekend to try to use it again because
I had an 11X17 I wanted to print. It was worse off than I remembered it. I
mean this thing is blasting ink out all OVER the place. 1/8" sized dots
scattered all over in color and black. It's real nasty, I tell ya.

It's almost like it has a cold and is sneezing :)

I would like to get it as operational as possible if for no other reason
than to use up the cartridges I have left (they are out of date, but should
still work).

I don't care about it _that_ much, but I thought the adventure might be fun.

I do intend on getting one of the new Canon i9xx printers when they come out
in the US IF they are finally up to the same specs as the i950/i960.

Hi Larry

I did just that. My HP c710 gave up its ghost. I disassembled it (nothing to
lose) and found that the ink pad was completely caked with dry ink. After I
cleaned it and polished it and talked to it nicely, it worked like new. Even
the color printing function worked again.

I got a lot of help by asking for disassembly instructions in the help group
at this site:
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/

I then bought 3 new cartridges and the printer promptly quit again. :-(

So, you pays your dollar and you takes your luck.

Before you rip it apart I suggest a less invasive procedure. Remove
the top cover. Use the yellow button to move the head over to the
cartridge changing position on the left. You'll see the foam pad
capping mechanism n the right. Dribble some windex/windolene on the
pad and wick out the ink with a paper towel. Repeat until the pad is
again white. The pad is spring loaded so be careful not to know it off
it's mounting with undo pressure. Now moisten the pad again with
windex and return to the head to the parked position. Turn off the
printer. Wait a couple hours. Repeat as required. When the pad stays
relatively clean try a nozzle test/cleaning session under the utility
tab in the printer driver properties dialog box.

Before you have your fun try charging an old cartridge with Windolene
(Windex USA) and print some windy pages. This has helped quite a few stuck
up Epsons as it cleans from within: the crud often invades the heads
dependent on how long it has been blocked.

Before you toss it, why not invest in the purchase of the service
manual for a whopping $10.77 and try your luck.

Thanks for the info Walter!

If it does work out, I'll be buying either refills or cheap clone cartridges
for it. All I really want it for is for printing basic chart-type
large-format prints.

Thanks again!

This one is more than just a clogged head. It's major sneezing of ink and
splotches.

I believe the print head has a hemmorioid or something.

To be honest, the printer isn't worth $10.77 to me. I have been fighting
with and cussing at this printer for so long, I'm sort of looking forward to
taking a screwdriver to it to be honest :)

Problem solved!

I gave up and tossed in the trash. Now I don't have to worry about it any
more :)

I believe Canon is coming out with a new wide-format model. The i9900 or
something like that. I'll pick one of those up when they hit the street.
