Envelopes & Address Book

Recently I decided for the first time to populate the
Windows Address Book. Imagine my horror when I found that
the data cannot be called by the Envelopes Wizard in
Word. The error message talks about a failed logon to
something called "Microsoft Exchange." What and Where is
this please? Can I access it via AOL, my default ISP? If
not, is there any alternative permitting me to forego the
pleasure of writing out the same addresses weekly? (I
have only WinXP Home and Word 2002.)

The address function in Word requires a MAPI compliant e-mail address book
and essentially this means using Outlook.
Microsoft Exchange is an expensive corporate alternative and is not
practical for the home user.

It is possible to use mail merge with the addresses stored in a table. It
has been such a long time since I used that method that I have forgotten how
to do it (Learnt it on a college course, ECDL, and promptly forgot it after
I got my certificate)

IIRC you just export your OE addresses to a Comma Separated Values file
and use that as the data source for the Mail Merge (sorry; I'm writing
this on a machine that doesn't have OE so I can't check exactly how it's
done. In Outlook it's one of the File -- Import and Export options).
