Before you start delving anywhere boot up your machine
and then after you have booted to the desktop and
everything has loaded press the number lock key. The
number lock light will illuminate on your keyboard. Now
close down your pc. Windowsshould save your settings so
the number lock is 'on' when you next bot up. i had a
similar problem and this cured it.
The next obvious place is the bios, but usually the
number lock is set to 'on' by default, but there is no
harm in taking a look. Because i don't know what bios you
have i can't give specific instructions. However, reboot
your machine. As the bios details appear, i.e., memory
check etc you should see some details at the bottom of
your screen. They disappear quickly so watch carefully.
It should say something like 'to enter bios press Del' I
have an award bios and all i do is boot up and then press
the Del (delete) key to enter the bios setup. As i have
said i cannot tell you exactly where you will find the
option in yourt bios, but go through each section
carefully until you locate it. YUou should find it is
enabled, but if it isn't then enable it. By pressing the
Esc button you can go back to the main menu to continue.
Once you have enabled the number lock go back to the main
menu and select Exit and Save. If you don't select this
your changes will not be saved and you will be back to
square one. Incidentally, *don't* make any other changes
to the bios. If you don't know what you are doing you can
cause a host of other problems for yourtself.
I you have your motherboard user guide it will tell you
in there how to enter the bios.
Hope this helps
