IBM A30 tower. P4

I either have forgotten or never knew, how to enter WinXP Safe Mode. Key F8
on Bootup does not do it, although the Help instruction direct that.

Any advise is appreciated.

You might try F5, although I've always used F8. Sometimes the window
between when the computer starts and loads the operating system (when
you need to press the F8 key) is very small. The trick is to repeatedly
tap the F8 key as the computer is starting up. If the BIOS gives a
keyboard error or asks you to choose the boot order, press the key to
boot from the hard drive with your left hand and then F8 with your
right.

It ought to accept F8 - tap repeatedly as the initial BIOS or makers
screen goes to black, *before* the Windows splash comes up.

If that does not do it (and the duration of the 'window' for it may have
been deliberately set down), you can, in XP, Start - Run - MSConfig.exe

On the BOOT.INI page check /SAFEBOOT and exit to reboot to safe mode.
Once there you will need to run it again to uncheck so as to be able to
boot normally again. Exit - do not necessarily bother to reboot
immediately, but next time you do there will be a message about 'System
Configuration'. Check the 'Do not show again' box and exit
