Enter network password workaround for hosted documents

I'm hosting a site that offers information via word documents. The developer
has developed the site in ASP.

Some versions of Windows causes the "Enter network Password" box to pop up,
but on others (like my XP Pro SP2 box) it does not. If you cancel the box,
the document opens. I've tried various security settings on the files and
containing folders, but none have worked.

What can I do to prevent the "Enter netwrok Password" box to pop up on some
pc's (eg. windows 2000, '98). Surely there must be some sort of underlying
security option on the server?

I've found this question all over the net, but no answers to accompany
them....

Any help would be appreciated!

I too am hosting a site w/ Word Docs ... one user has experienced thi
problem and regardless of what he enters in the userid and password
box, he merely gets a window saying contact the administrator. Onl
one user has this problem and I am unable to duplicate on my PCs at m
location. Did you ever solve this problem?

Sounds like an Authentication issue revolving around NTLM and LM issues. What
operating systems are involved? WIN98 perhaps?
