After booting my computer on my enter key will work for 15
- 30 minutes. After that it will not work. It fails on
any program. Doug suggested that I remove the hot fix
Kb828028 and at first I thought that fixed it but it
didn't. I have tried several keyboards and nothing helped.
If I reboot again it will work for 15 - 30 minutes and
then nothing. Does anybody have any suggestions?

maybe keyboard driver is corrupt? or it could be some
spyware. go to lavasoftusa.com (ad-aware) download and
then run the update and then scan for scum ware.

There have been many posts recently concerning the enter key not working.
Unfortunately, nobody has a definite answer to the problem. It seems to be
related to a recent "hotfix" ( KB828028) but, it only effects some machines
and not
others. After some discussions in the newsgroups and person to person with a
few tech people, I/we've come to the conclusion that there is a conflict
between the hotfix and some software that is installed. It may be the brand
of keyboard, the AV program you are using or a particular screen-saver, etc.
There is not enough information given by those effected for anyone to be
able to determine a relationship between the computers that are effected.

My machine was not effected and, evidently, none of the MVP's has had a
problem. Otherwise, by now, one of them would have come up with a solution.
There have been people report having done various things that seemed to cure
it on their machine but, they vary so much as to make no answer to the
problem clear.

You might try uninstalling that "hotfix" but, that still doesn't solve the
puzzle.

I realize, this post is not much help but, perhaps it will inspire someone
more knowledgeable than I to investigate the issue a bit more thoroughly and
find an answer to the puzzle.

I think I am on to something, I used the "MSCONFIG" and
under the start up, I disabled everything in the start up.
So far my "Enter" key has not failed. I am in the process
of bringing up programs but so far haven't found which one
is doing it. I have the Hot Fix KB828028 installed. I
will let you folk's know which program is stopping this
enter key..

Hi Don,

Please *DO* post back and let us know. An MVP or two have asked for
feedback, as well. With enough information, someone will come up with a
solution. I am under the impression, MS wants to know what is causing the
problem.

Cheers, JAX

Yes please let us all know what you find.

If the problem comes back can you try pressing CTRL+ENTER to see if that
works (Someone suggested that some key mapping might be occuring).

Also note if it seems to occur just after you close a IE window.

If you have a Compaq or HP computer, you may want to take a look at this

Don,

Please do. The more information that we can give MS, the faster they can come up with a fix. It sounds like an application compatibility issue. Possibly a multimedia keyboard control program?

Hey, Folks I founds my problem. My first thing was to use
use the MSCONFIG and I disabled all of my start up items
and then the enter key worked all the time. Then I started
to enable a few at a time until I found the one that was
effecting my enter key. Here is the one that was effecting
my computer. It is C:\WinPatrol. With everything
connected and C:\WinPatrol unchecked everything was fine.
I went to my control panel with the ADD/Remove option, I
deleted that program and everything works fine now. I am
not saying this will fix everybody's problem but I would
subjest with the MSCONFIG to see if you can pin point your
problem. I left my computer on all night and I still had my
enter key working this morning.

Good thinking Don, now we're getting somewhere. I have been keeping track of
the posts and have figured the problem to be something to do with some sort
of browser add-on. I have been thinking it along the lines of a popup
blocker, adware control, etc. I will add your information to the list of
"cures" I have been compiling.

Cheers, JAX
