Enter key not working

John

I've read lots of responses to these messages telling
people to try another keyboard, to try cleaning under the
keycap, etc., and some responses were downright rude -
one guy said "So use another keyboard then! It doesn't
take a genius to figure that out!"
Well, if you are such a genius, then why does the enter
key still not work even after replacing the keyboard?

Hi John -

Question: is this a USB keyboard (with an installed driver) or a PS/2
keyboard?

I've also been seeing a lot of posts on this problem lately, with no offered
solutions other than "buy a new keyboard"... "clean the keys"... etc.

Personally I suspect that a recent XP update has caused some keyboards to
have problems.

If it's a USB keyboard, maybe you'll have some luck reinstalling the driver.
Worth a shot.

Hi Jef,

I also have noticed a "rash" of posts concerning the "Enter" key. Your
conclusion is the same as mine. For this many posts, all of a sudden, it
almost has to be caused by a new update and only certain keyboards are
effected. I have read all the posts and have seen no solution offered.

Cheers, JAX

As far as rude responses, it's hard to control what other people say, and on
any newsgroup there are always some people who take pleasure in being rude
or irritating or worse. This one is not nearly as bad as some.

As far as the keyboard problem, it's one of those things that's hard to
diagnose on the Internet. Unless someone has had that specific problem and
has fixed it, the best anyone can do is offer wild guesses and/or
suggestions based on some logic. In this case, we've probably all seen
keyboards with gunk under the keys, so that's going to be the first
suggestion that comes to mind.

This may be the sort of problem that's best solved hands-on. Then someone
can look at all the settings, the hardware, the software, the
hotfixes...change one thing at a time until the problem is solved.

I have seen one response that worked for the user. He changed his k/b layout
from US International to US (I think).

I read that one too but, what other than an update, could cause people's
setting to change and why some and not others? My machine has not been
effected by whatever it is.

Nor mine and it has me stumped too.

I am curious about it. I went to Regional and Language settings, I did not
see an entry for "English International", otherwise, I was going to reset to
see what the effect was. I doubt that it is a matter of language settings
though.

Borrowed this from another NG ....

There seem to be numerous people (only one on this newsgroup recently) who
have a problem with their Enter/Return key. This is beginning to look like a
software problem NOT a keyboard fault. If you are one of these people try
using the other Enter key on the numeric
key pad. If that also gives you problems then it probably isn't the switch
contacts in your keyboard.

A web search reveals this problem is being reported elsewhere as well.....

See here..

and here

That last one says ...

"I removed the last secruity update for XP and my enter key started working
again.
Thursday, February 12, 2004 Security Update for Windows XP (KB828028) "

But I don't work for Microsoft so I can't comment recommend this as a
solution.

The site you linked offers no solution to the problem. It only reiterates
that there is a problem. Since it doesn't effect my machine, I suppose, I
should not worry about it but, I think it is caused by some MS malfunction
and that bothers me.

JAX

I missed your last link. It supports my suspicion. Now, the question
remains, why some and not others? And then, how did MS allow something like
this to happen?

Maybe you don't run Norton...and they do! lol

Usual software screw-ups...

1. Norton update

2. Windows update

Hell...it might even be a new preventive feature of Norton...to keep
you from sending out any virus-laden files! lol

Whenever trying to solve a computer problem, the very first thing you
should ALWAYS do is to try to determine if the problem is a SOFTWARE
problem...or a HARDWARE problem.

With your particular problem...

Boot into the BIOS...then pick a menu item that requires an ENTER hit.
If it works, you have an operating system problem.

If you can't find such an entry in the BIOS, you can also try using a
boot floppy. Create a very simple batch file on it...that includes a
PAUSE command. When it gets to the pause, hit the ENTER key.

Let us know.

Trent,

You may have something there! I gave up Norton years ago. I found that it
bogged the system down and caused more problems than it could ever fix.

We had the same problem - neither Enter key would work...
First checked add/remove - Found and Uninstalled date mgr, precision
time and new.net Domains 6.10. Restarted = Both Enter keys are now
working!

"I am having the same problem, which began recently. None of the
Enter keys work after a while. I use a Dell Dimension 4500S - win XP
Home. It must be a sotware glitch. Could it have come from MS
updates?? Who knows. How does one alert Microsoft?? byblos
