Enter key doesn't work in address bar

I just upgraded from Win2k pro to XP pro. If I type a URL
in the address bar and hit enter (or GO) then nothing
happens. I have to type the full URL with http:// in
front. e.g www.microsoft.com doesn't work but
http://www.microsoft.com does work. This does not seem
like an 'upgrade' to me. Any ideas?
