There have been many posts recently concerning the enter key not working.
Unfortunately, nobody has a definite answer to the problem. It seems to be
related to a recent "hotfix" ( KB828028) but, it only effects some machines
and not
others. After some discussions in the newsgroups and person to person with a
few tech people, I/we've come to the conclusion that there is a conflict
between the hotfix and some software that is installed. It may be the brand
of keyboard, the AV program you are using or a particular screen-saver, etc.
There is not enough information given by those effected for anyone to be
able to determine a relationship between the computers that are effected.

My machine was not effected and, evidently, none of the MVP's has had a
problem. Otherwise, by now, one of them would have come up with a solution.
There have been people report having done various things that seemed to cure
it on their machine but, they vary so much as to make no answer to the
problem clear.

You might try uninstalling that "hotfix" but, that still doesn't solve the
puzzle.

I realize, this post is not much help but, perhaps it will inspire someone
more knowledgeable than I to investigate the issue a bit more thoroughly and
find an answer to the puzzle.

I haven't downloaded a hotfix since the last one came out,
which I believe was over a month ago, and the only
software I installed was two weeks ago. And this enter key
problem happened with me just two days ago. What was the
last hotfix, so I can try uninstalling it? My enter key
seems to work fine when it comes to using it with instant
messages and my web browser, but nowhere else.

The hotfix was KB828028. See if it's in your add/remove programs in control
panel. If it is, remove it and see if that solves your problem and please
post back and tell us if it worked. Also, please, what was the program you
installed? If removing the patch doesn't help, it is easy enough to run W
update and re-install it.

Cheers, JAX

That link might address the issue for non HP/Compaq users as well

The scan code mapper is not a HP/Compaq specific feature for any Windows XP
user...

Hi Jason and JAX,
I have the same Enter Key problem on a W2K Pro.
I removed KB828028 and it did not solve the problem.
I also tried the Scancode solution as suggested by HP/Compaq : It did not
solve the problem.
As already seen by other poeple problem occurs when task IEXPLORE.EXE
remains active after having closed any IE window.....
Stopping (cancelling) IEXPLORE.EXE immediatly frees the Enter key....
Any advice will help us...
Best regards
Francois

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the info. I "kind'a" thought that was the case but, was not sure
so, I didn't want to throw in a guess.

Cheers, JAX

Hi Francois,

Thanks for the feed-back. Did you reboot after removing the hotfix before
trying the key again? I don't know if that would make a difference or not,
the thought is just another step in trying to solve the problem.

Your observation about IEXPLORE not closing may be a good step toward an
answer. Are you using any type of internet enhancement app's, or popup
blocker, etc.? What browsers do you use? Do you have a configurable
firewall, if so, what program permissions have you set to allow access to
the net?

Please post back, JAX

AH-HA! It's the new MSN toolbar they advertise for on damn near every MS page that they want you to install. As soon as I saw "Iexplore.exe" being opened, I know that the toolbar was my most recent software download

If you have the toolbar, remove it. Your enter key should work after that

Hi JAX
Sure, I rebooted my PC at each step...
I just use Internet Explorer V6.0.2800.1108IS plus fixes Q828750 and Q330994
woithout any special enhancement or popup blocker.
I use BlackIce ad firewall.
Again, remeber that I use W2K pro and not WinXP but the problem is exactly
the same...
Regards
Francois

What toolbar?

I have been all over microsoft.com and have not seen any ads for this
toolbar you are talking about.

Hello Again Francois,

I was just reading a post in another thread. One of the posters came up with
an idea that he said solved the problem for him. He went to "msconfig" and
disabled everything in the Startup list except, his AV and firewall. That
stopped the problem. Then he started restoring the items in startup, one by
one, till the problem reoccurred.

That may be a tedious process but, I think it's worth a try.

Other possiblity that someone else raised is that certain spyware components
are interfering with the Enter key.

See if you have Precision Time or Date Manager or New.Dot in your add/remove
programs.

If you do, remove them all and see if that helps.

After that, make sure you do a full scan for spyware.

See this page for more information about what spyware is, scanning for
spyware, and removal of spyware.

Hi JAX,

New.Net Domains seems the culpright.... All my thanks to Jason.
Since I removed it, several IEXPLORE.EXE tasks remains active - even if I
close all mi IE windows - but the Enter key remains active... At least up to
now....
Again, thanks for your help.

Francois
