The enter button will not work in certain instances. For
example, when I enter info into a form (ie - a search
engine) I have to click on the Submit button....I can't
hit the Enter button to submit the info. Also, when I'm
in a word processor I cannot hit the enter button to
create a new paragraph. Any idea what the problem is?

There have been many posts recently concerning the enter key not working.
Unfortunately, nobody has a definite answer to the problem. It seems to be
related to a recent "hotfix" ( KB828028) but, it only effects some machines
and not
others. After some discussions in the newsgroups and person to person with a
few tech people, I/we've come to the conclusion that there is a conflict
between the hotfix and some software that is installed. It may be the brand
of keyboard, the AV program you are using or a particular screen-saver, etc.
There is not enough information given by those effected for anyone to be
able to determine a relationship between the computers that are effected.

My machine was not effected and, evidently, none of the MVP's has had a
problem. Otherwise, by now, one of them would have come up with a solution.
There have been people report having done various things that seemed to cure
it on their machine but, they vary so much as to make no answer to the
problem clear.

If you have an HP or Compaq machine, the following link may be of interest
to you. I don't know if it would apply to any other machine.

You might try uninstalling that "hotfix" but, that still doesn't solve the
puzzle.

I realize, this post is not much help but, perhaps it will inspire someone
more knowledgeable than I to investigate the issue a bit more thoroughly and
find a solution to the puzzle.

That is normal for some forms. You must click the submit button in order
for it to work. Pressing enter doesn't always work.

Hi Wojo,

Through the newsgroups that I have been following, the problem seems to be
close to being solved. *It seems*, that there are conflicts causing the
problem. One poster said that he had stopped everything in msconfig except
his AV and firewall. That cured the ENTER problem. He then went back and
turned programs back on, one at a time, until the problem reoccurred. He was
able to narrow it down to WinPatrol. Another poster did the same exercise
and it turned out to be MSN toolbar, in his case.

This is just my observation from following the threads that are related to
the problem so, I will not argue with anyone on the issue. This statement is
not aimed at you Wojo, it's meant for the trolls out there.

LOL, JAX

Trolls, around here? Nah LOL
I've been watching the subject a bit too but am not quite so optimistic
about it being solved. I am fortunate not to be having that problem on any
of my PC's but am watching more out of curiosity than anything. Close to
being solved? I hope so but seems like everybody's solutions have been
different making it difficult to pinpoint. But I certainly hope your right.
Oh, and I knew you weren't aiming at me or I'd have ducked :)

Hi Wojo,

It has been, pretty much, established that the problem is related to IE not
closing properly. Now, it is a matter of finding what is causing that. Both
of the posters I mentioned removing app's said the app's were add on for IE.
A few more reports like those may give someone (more knowledgeable than I)
something to go on in finding the exact problem and a cure. Up until the
past couple of days, there have been no clues at all to go on and nothing
that would link the effected computers.

Like yourself, my computer has not been effected so, I am just following the
subject out of interest and in hopes of finding something to pass on to help
someone else. The way my machine is setup, the only things I have set to run
on boot are my AV, firewall and, Pop-Up Stopper. That, in itself, is
something of a clue that reinforces the add-on issue.

I hope someone does come up with a solution soon because, I sure can
sympathize with those who are having problems.

Cheers, JAX

Several solutions reported from various users. JAX has covered most of
them. Here's another possible if you're using a Compaq or HP computer
