I have been all over these and the Office 2003 forums, and have so far run into hundreds of instances of the same/similar problem with an almost equal number of recommended fixes. The main problem is the slow performance of Windows XP Pro (sp1) at startup and when opening Office 2003 and other applications, and doing routine Windows tasks like emptying the recycle bin

In detail the problems are these
- Startup is taking nearly 10 minute
- Opening programs can result in the system hanging for a period of time, if I open the Task Manager and check performance, often times it will show 100% CPU usage for a moment, then it drops and the program originally started will appear
- Normal Windows tasks such as emptying the recycle bin or trying to open the "add/remove programs" window will take an indeterminte amount of tim
- opening Office 2003 applications will ALWAYS hang until I've clicked the mouse inside the program window once, then take another 10-30 seconds before being ready to work with. (If I open Task Manager during this interim period, it will say that the program is not responding, but will then usually come back to normal "running" status.
- Downloads will hang up for a period of time, but usually seem to get "jump started" when I open task manager. (??

I am running Windows XP Pro (Sp1) on an AMD AthlonXP 1800+ Chip with 1GB of RA

There have been a hundred fragmented questions/responses on these and the Office forums, many of them pointing the finger at Symantec Antivirus Software I'm using Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 8.0, which doesn't give the option to turn off the Office plug-in as is recommended so many other places

I have so far

Updated and run Adawar
Updated and run Symantec Antiviru
Run Windows Updat
Downloaded Bootvis and run the optomize proces
Used MSConfig to troubleshoot and remove extra programs loaded at startu
Downloaded a new security certificate (getrootcer.cer) from the appropriate authority and executed i
uninstalled Office 2003 and all the component
uninstalled Symantec Antivirus (Corporate Edition v 8.0
Cleaned all references from the registry of programs that are no-longer ther
Reinstalled Office 2003 (and updated
Reinstalled Symantec Antivirus (and updated

I'm really, really starting to get beyond frustration with this issue. 10 minute start-up times and 2 to 5 minutes to open a program is unacceptable in 2004. I firmly believe that all of the above problems are related, and would like to know if there is ANYTHING that can be done short of erasing the hard-drive and starting over

Thank you for any help you can possibly give

P.S. Please read this thread completely before offering up links to other sites that may or may not have some help. I've already been to most of those, and the solutions for specific instances are not working in most of the cases like mine that I have found in these forums

Does your motherboard support that much ram?Take some
out if you can.You may have a bad ram stick if it does.If
you have PC Doctor try a ram test.

You can deleat Norton but it's still there.

the one from etrust. If you have more than one now may be
your problem.

Motherboard supports up to 3 GB RAM

Just ran a test that came back clean (BurnIn Test 4.0

The solution for people 'who've tried every solution and nothing works' is
start over from scratch, This is guaranteed to work - presuming that you
completely understand how to perform every step. That's not a presumption to
be taken lightly. Many people *think* they understand what to do, but don't.

The first step is to take an image of your entire hard disk, and to test the
image.

Now re-start the computer into the BIOS, to make sure that all your hardware
is correctly recognized.

Now perform a clean install of WP. Does XP not install properly, or at all?
Your problem is hardware.

If XP installs correctly, go directly to Windows Update. Download all
critical updates.

Does your computer function correctly with an updated copy of Windows XP? If
not, your problem is hardware. If yes, your problem is application software.
Load each application individually and test it, until you find the
application that's causing your problem.

Ok, even went so far as to follow the detailed instructions at: https://www.verisign.com/support/vendors/exp-gsid-ssl.html
regarding the intermediate certificate for IIS 5.0 (discovered I have 5.1
running, although why, I have no idea).

Ok, followed the instructions to remove NAV (Again). These instructions are found at http://service1.symantec.com/support and do a search for Document ID: 200208121358304

So now that I'm completely sure that NAV has been removed from the machine, the problems above still persist

I'm becoming more and more convinced that it is definitely some problem with Windows XP Pro. Possibly brought to light by the installation of Office 2003.

Thanks for the suggestions. Keep them coming and I'll keep my patience to try them all :-)

Hehe, I guess we stumped them with this one. I'm still seeing others with the same problem post here, and several who have tried nearly everything I have

Sent an e-mail to MS Support. If I get an answer, I'll post again

Thanks for all the help and suggestions

And a tip when viewing these forums, click the link to view by "Newest Posts" instead of "Newest Threads". Helps to find out what answers have come up since things can drop several pages in a day.

You have spent enough time on this. Back up your datafiles reformat and re-install

Not only will your system be clean, it will either work or you need a system repair.

I had to this type of problem on a Wim ME system. Once I had re-installed it and my software in one go, it was as stable as 98

Just a though

I believe that you are a REAL problem Michael.
I sense that you MAY have been 'here' before.
How do think YOU might resolve THAT?
