I just bought a HP 2410 and I was wondering if anyone has had any luck
enlarging photos? The book says how to scan them, but not really anything
about how to enlarge them.
I have a 3 X 5 that I want to enlarge to a 8 X 10 and be able to print it
out. Whats the best way to do that?....thanks for the help,,,Tom
What software do you have? Scanning.... PhotoImage manipulation.....

Scan at a moderately high resolution, say 600 Pixels or "dots" per inch.

Save the image and remember the name and location of the image.

Load the image into some kind of photo manipulation software....
software that lets you set picture size and pixels in the image.

You will want to crop the 3 x 5 inch to be the proportions of the 8 x
10. You won't like a 2 x (5 by 5) = 6 inches x 10 inches as a final image.

The original photo aspect ratio was 3:5 or the width was 60 percent of
the length.

The desired 8X10 aspect ratio is 8:10 or the width is 80 percent of the
length.

So the 3x5 becomes something like an 8x13.33 inch which gets cropped
down to 8 inches by 10 inches.

Print the resulting 8 x 10 and don't mess around too much with imagining
that you will get a sharper picture by trying to force the electronic
picture to have a whole ton of pixels or "dots".

Your original 3x5 almost certainly was never as sharp as you thought
(use a good magnifying glass or scope to see the unsharpness).

You aren't going to actually make it real sharp by fooling with
inexpensive computer programs because the sharpness actually isn't
there, and the enlargement will be even less sharp close up, but from
six feet away it will look good.

Fiddle around with the color stuff if you like, and maybe you can make
the printed color match the original photo, or the monitor screen, but
most likely you can never match both, and often you will have to work
modestly in order to sort of match either the screen or the original photo.

Take your time.

Have fun.

The easiest way is to load 8.5x11 photo paper in the paper tray, load the photo
on the glass, select copy twice, press 2 (reduce/enlarge), 3(custom size), 266,
OK, 3 (copy quality), 1 (best) then press start color. This is easier than it
sounds....

You will need to physically crop the photo a bit as a 3x5 does not evenly scale
to an 8x10.

IOW, make a folder specifically for scans. In fact, you
should give some thought to setting up a well-organised and
carefully named system of folders and subfolders, so that
you can find what you want easily. Ignore the defaults "My
pictures" etc supplied by Micros**t. Most software will
remember the last folder that you saved to from that
program. IOW, if you saved your vacation pix to
"Scans/Vacation", the next time you use the scanner, it
will save to that subfolder, unless you tell it different.
Telling it different also helps you to remember what you're
doing. :-)
